hair and nails

Relatives visiting for the holidays. My little cousin, only five, can show me so much about the world, or at least how he percieves. Makes me remember what being a little kid is all about. Everything is so black and white, so clear, no shades of gray, no doubt. It's what is seen, everything is taken at face value.

An explaination? Sure. I've got a lovely shade of green nail polish on. My hair is long. My cousin looks at me. He sees the nail polish. "Your nails are painted," he informs me. "I know." "Then you must be a girl." Tee hee. How cute. How obvious. Merely one example. Another one, perhaps. A little squishy head thing that my sister got from a friend. Asked if it's mine, I reply "No, that's my sister's." "That's why it's pink," is the response.

Now I don't really have anything to say about all of this. It's not a complaint. It's merely an observation. There's no way that he's formulating these ideas on his own. Society? Sure, blame it all on society. Of course we are all products of our society, so why not?

Unless it's something deeper. Why is pink always associated with girls? There must be a reason, I just don't know it. Please tell me. I do remember back when I was younger, it was the same thing. Boys had short hair, girls, long. Basically the only difference at the time. So obviously, i've got long hair, and a distinctly girly thing on my hands, so the obvious conclusion...

My cousin isn't stupid. He doesn't really think that I'm a girl. But just the fact that he said it makes me think. People will always have preconcieved notions about things. People will always make uninformed judgements. People will be people.

This isn't always a bad thing.
