I'm pretty sure this was some sort of "Stop the Police State" protest. The most interesting part of it was the huge line of police vehicles (vans, cars, trucks) following the group of about a dozen protesters, marching from Union Square to the southwest corner of Thompkins Square Park. There, the protesters set up a soap box of sorts and yelled and screamed for the police to "Get the fuck out of [there]" and to go "arrest the drug users" and to "stop infringing on their rights." Meanwhile, the police just stood around looking bored. A couple of them were chatting about dinner plans. It was all quite surreal. (Ok, I'll admit it, those quotes up there might not be exact quotes, but they're pretty close.)
