cs4 - past, present

the past

Second semester my freshman year mike, danny, jon, seth, sam, and i all were hired to be teaching assistants for cs4, the lesser of two intro cs courses. It was lots of fun, i think we all learned a lot.

but it was a more social thing than anything else.

I don't know if i was a good ta. I helped some people, learned some stuff on my own, learned how to deal with some politics. But most of all it was an excuse to be with a bunch of cool people.

present

The next year, Seth and Danny worked on porting the course over to C, from pascal. Good move. Did the lectures, seth wrote a new environment. It was all good.

then the hiring started. First there was the head ta hiring session. We already knew that Danny and Seth were going to be in charge. Then jon was hired. He's really into into the whole TA thing. It would seem to me, however, that he's spent too much time on that other intro course. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. He's actually been putting way too much effort into that TA stuff all together. cs people are weird that way.

who am i to say?

After all, we're all just one big happy family here in the cs department.

But then the "normal" ta hiring sessions started. That was all weird, because of all the recruitment that (seth) did for a whole bunch of upperclassmen. That, coupled with the fact that the cs15 ta killed themselves so badly in front of the students the semester before meant that the freshpeoples really were scared of applying to ta

"my god, if i ta, i'm going to DIE"
seemed to be the general feeling

They asked me to apply. Almost prodded me. I finally gave in. And got rejected. That hurt. A little. It pissed me off more than anything. It really has worked out for the best, since I would have ended the year as a blubbering mess if i had been a ta, and done theatre, and tried to keep up with the rest of my coursework. But the fact that i had been asked (almost told) to ta, and then rejected was the bad part.

Whatever. They were just looking out for me.
