I recently found myself the participant in one of the largest group activities known in this country. It's not so much an exclusive event but these days it seems harder and harder to get in. Pretty much it's who you know and whether you can weasel you in the front door.
That's right. I got a job.
Well, ok, so let me qualify this a little bit. I'm on this contract where I'm doing web development work and they really like me and keep wanting to hire me and I don't really feel that I want to take a full-time job right now, even in this so called "economy" and especially not in the tech field. But it's good people and it's fun work and if the office would remain some sort of reasonable temperature, things might actually be ok.
However, I do miss working out of my home. I miss being able to wake up and wander over to the computer and read the paper and my email while sipping my morning juice. (Well. Gulping my morning juice. Sipping juice is kind of funny, especially when you get the pulpy kinds that I get because then you're really either just getting juice or just getting pulp but you're really not getting the full pulpyjuice experience.) I don't miss not getting paid by deadbeat clients or wondering whether I'm going to need to take a way lower paying job just so that I can be making some amount of money in any given week. But what I do lose is the freedom and comfort of my apartment.
And really, what I miss most of all is being able to work in various levels of undress. Because, let's be honest here. Shirts? Not really necessary. Pants I feel are important as the worst thing is to get your ass stuck to your chair or, even more awkward is getting those little creases in your butt from the fabric of your desk chair. But shirts? Whatever!
There's not so much of that going on in the office.
Honestly, I don't want any of that going on.
