I would say things like "it's not really exciting unless there is the possibility of bodily injury during your workday," or things of that nature. And I still sort of mean it. There is a calm of sorts that comes from listening to the chatter of electricians high above on scaffolds as you (I) wander about the stage coiling cable, playing with rigging hardware or any of the assorted other activities that will occupy me in my role as an electrician in a theatre. But really, what the hell am I doing?
The truth of the matter is that just recently, I have discovered the fact that I have gotten just about as far as I want to in this particular role in this particular field. In much of Corporate America, there is a ladder, and we (you) strive to climb it. So brings about phrases such as "corporate ladder" and "glass ceiling," to name a few. Where I am now, there are going to be bigger jobs, but really, it will be more of the same. More theatres, more carrying lights, more carrying, more hanging. But not necessarily anything more exciting.
What does this mean? It means that I'm actually, for the first time since I quit my job at the startup that will forever remain unnamed, thinking of rejoining the full-timers. More information on that front yet to come, because I've slept on it, and it still feels like a good idea, but we will see.
...
The city is hot and sticky and it is making me restless. And I can not get comfortable at this desk. Is it the desk's fault? Is it the monitor's? The keyboard's?
I need an ergonomics expert, pronto.
But first, some sleep.
