it's really amazing. i've found on my morning walk to work that the streets in allston, where our office is located and where i will be living come monday, are dirtier than the streets in new york city. i mean new york has its smells and its fair share of shit littering the streets, but what you see in allston is typical urban "we've never heard of street cleaners" fare.

what's even more amazing is the walk from brookline to allston. brookline is a fairly well-to-do town right next to the city of boston. allston is actually part of boston. brookline is immaculate, but when you walk over the town line, the trash starts swirling up around you.

all of this isn't to say that i don't like allston. it's just an interesting comparisson. on the other hand, alston has more of that alive city vibe to parts of it (stemming mostly from the numerous bars in the area and the large liquor marts, but still) and a whole lot more of that, oh, culture. nary a utility pole is crossed which is not covered as far as the arm can reach with bills announcing shows at the local tavern or cafe.

though it could certainly use more cafes.

in fact, i have not found what i consider to be a "cafe" in the traditional "sit down and relax over a seaming cup of coffee" sort of a way. though i have not really explored the neighborhood yet.

i move in on monday. the elevator in the building works. the floor will be freshly polyurethaned (mmm... spelling) and the walls will be a fresh coat of white.

tomorrow i am off to central new jersey to ring in the rolling of the clocks (or the end of the world, whichever comes first) with my oldest and dearest friend from high school.

one year ago i was at school. i expected to be in boston doing theatre, not computers, and i never expected that i would have put in three months at delias. i was not supposed to start job hopping this early in my employment career, but i was supposed to be working in a startup.

here's to no expectations for the next year.

i've learned that it's much more enjoyable to take life as it comes along, chew it up, swish it around a bit to get it really juicy, and then decide whether to spit it out and move on, or to swallow it and let it do whatever it will with you.

oh, and i decided last year that i would not be in charge of damage control at another new year's party.

here's to keeping resolutions.
