The Alamo Returns to Astor Place
18 November 2005The big black cube in Astor Place has been a part of my life since I moved back to the city in 2001. It always made for a good reference point, meeting place and otherwise fun landmark in an increasingly sterile city. I will admit to having stood dumbfounded, staring at the empty space in the middle of Astor Place the day they took the cube away. I even called the phone number listed in its place and spoke to the gentleman at the Parks Department who insisted that it would be returned, eventually. Being the eternal optimist, I rejected rumors that the cube (titled "The Alamo") was removed because the Sculpture for Living didn't want the riff raff floating around in front of their building, but I did breathe a sigh of relief when I learned that it would finally be returning to its home all spic and span after eight months of maintenance. Welcome home, Alamo!
