Speech and Theatre


The Theatre department encoursges all students to develop their interest and ability in theatre to the fullest. Several courses are offeredand courses with an asterisk (*) may be repeated for credit. All theatre courses fulfill the state arts requiremen t.

Full Year Courses

Theatre Repertory Company * (1 credit)
This course is for the talented and dedicated theatre student who wishes to act in repertory-style. A number of challenging plays will be staged throughout the year for public performance with students playing a number of parts. This class i s open to students who have taken two semesters of other theatre classes. An audition is also required.

Semester Courses Offered In Fall 1995 & Spring 1996

Acting I and II (1/2 credit each)
These courses are for all students who want to act from the beginning student who has never been on stage to the student with considereable experience. Difference assignments will be given for the two levels. Acting I will focus on improving concentration, improvisation and role playing, play analysis and rehearsal techniques and Acting II will focus on styles of acting and characterization. Both Acting I and II will offer numerous classroom performance opportuniti es.

Stagecraft * (1/2 credit)
This class will give you some background in the many areas of technical theatre and backstage work. You will learn about set design, building and painting, props, lighting, sound, and costumes and makeup. You will have the opportunity to specialize in your areas of interest. You will also be expected to put in crew hours for actual productions.

Projects in Drama * (1/2 credit)
This course in an independent study for a limited number of students who have a special interest in drama that can not be met in a regularly scheduled course. Permission of the instructor is required.

Semester Courses offered only in Fall 1995

Children's Theatre * (1/2 credit)
You will learn techniques of performing for children and study seveal children's plays. Most of your class time will be spent rehearsing a play and actuall performing for children in various locations.

Musical Theatre (1/2 credit)
This course is for students who want to learn more about musical theatre. You will learn about the elements that make a musical by exploring the book, lyrics, and music of several classic musicals. In addition, you will have the opportunity to perfo rm musical scenes if you wish to sevelop your ablility to perform in musicals. This course is open to all students regardless of musical experience or ability.

Semester courses offered only in Spring 1996

Speech Communication (1/2 credit)
This course will help you feel more comfrotable when you are called upon to speak in front of people. You will learn about how we communicate verbally and non-verbally and you will fain practical experience using communication strategies to solve dis putes and problems. You will also have the opportunity to give several speeches in class for practice. Finally, some attention will be given to help you improve your speaking voice to your best advantage. This course is recommended for all stud ents.

Playwriting and Directing Workshop * (1/2 credit)
Students in this class will have to opportunity to work on techniques of playwriting and/or directing. Playwriting students will study various techniques and be expected to evolve original or adapted material. Directing students will study the art o f play direction and have the opportunity to stage various scenes for public performance.
