monday, october 12, 1998, 01:08 all theatres have spirits. i should know. i've spent enough time in theatres over the years to be able to say, with pretty much no doubt in my mind, that every theatre has some sort of spirit in it. some of them are actual ghosts, inhabiting the space after death. like the girl at the theatre where i used to work who had supposedly fallen off the roof (or out the window) of the attached museum and had been haunting the theatre ever since. some are less obvious, but present nevertheless. take the theatre here at school. my friend tells me that there are dark elves in the space who inhabit dark places and feed off the vibes of the people in the space. good vibes, and they'll take care of you 'cause you're taking care of their home. bad vibes and they'll start pranking you, you know, because that's where they live and they don't like you starting stuff with them. last night, i was working late in the theatre. leaving the electrics room, i distinctly remember shutting off all lights but leaving the door intentionally unlocked. after carrying my load downstairs and take a nap around two in the morning, i awoke again a couple of hours later to find that the electrics room door was locked and that one of the lights was on. now, i'm not ruling out the possiblity that there was somebody else in the theatre with me last night (though that's a bit worrisome as well, but a bit more comforting, for though i've heard voices and i've seen passing shapes in these spaces, i've never actually had them turn things on and off. now that i know that they can travel into my world with such ease, it makes me a bit more wary of these places. not that i feel that i'm in danger because of the spirits that currently inhabit my theatre, but rather when i'm places in new and unfamiliar places i'll have to be much more aware of my surroundings and whether or not i'm doing anything to bother the full time residents of the space.
